The great majority of households (according to the I Am Auckland status report 2017) are not in walkable distance to a frequent transit stop. That is not sufficient. As well as building upon the public transport network there needs to be some really good urban design (including family houses) filling in any gaps - perhaps brown field sites on the isthmus - close to where the frequent transit is.

Auckland needs to have an efficient and reliable transport network - Ferries, Trains and buses should all be connected into a complex transport network system. Fullers should be penalised every time their ferries run late (which are almost always late)

It would be fantastic to have zero-emission transportation across New Zealand. I hate the big whiff of exhaust I get when the bus goes by me. We are on an island, so as such, it requires tonnes of fossil fuel to get here and then again to leave. Then, once you're here, you need more fossil fuel to get around, hence the smell of exhaust. There needs to be a train from the airport to the CBD, with no emissions and can move thousands of people efficiently. Then, the ferries need to be electric. Buses should maybe be hydrogen or electric, and cars can be reduced to rare, and discouraged, forms of transportation. Fundamentally, transportation is a service and needs to be so convenient that taking a car becomes an annoyance.

It will be awesome, if the train network can be built and extended to Eastern Auckland area. The traffic is too congested in Eastern Auckland area.

Agree with many of the comments above but would like to add the equity component. Improving transport in the central area is important but largely benefits the wealthy. Building new light and heavy rails leads to gentrification along the alignment. So, what we need to complement investments on the isthmus are big investments on the periphery of Auckland to retrofit frequent, reliable and efficient low carbon transit into these areas which otherwise suffer from enforced car dependence. This can be done relatively cheaply (priority bus lanes, cycle lanes and improved integration of trains, buses, walking and cycling). Improving transport on the outskirts of Auckland will reduce the impact of the fuel tax on these communities, and increase opportunities and well-being in the outer-Auckland region.

Train tracks should have been laid in both directions to allow for traffic in both directions and more frequent train services.

We need more options so that living without a car is easier and equitable. Getting to and from the city centre is mostly easy, especially in higher socio-economic suburbs as we prioritise the 9-5 worker. We need more public transport outside of these hours to make our city safer at night, and for those working in typically lower paid jobs who work outside these hours. More cross-town options are needed so PT trips to doctors/supermarkets/dropping the kids off become more commonplace.

If we want the next generation to build habits of using public transport then there needs to be more yes. Beachlands and Maraetai have a very limited service at weekends leaving our young people limited choice either to stay home or travel by car - I hope this will help to reduce the drink driving too :(

We also need more incentives like cheaper fares. We are actively pursuing disincentives to driving (fuel tax, increased cost of parking especially in the city, less car parks etc) which is contributing to raising the standard of living and creating disparity. Large households with (for example) 6-7 people would still be better off financially driving everyone to work/school than pay daily for 6-7 hop cards. We need more public transport and we need to help everyone including those with limited options to choose to use it.

We need to change the rules on cycling on the pavement where no separate cycle lane is available, I've been told off with my small children by grumpy pedestrians for not making them cycle on a main highway. Kids should always be allowed to cycle on the pavement.

Attitude change
I often hear friends who drive complaining about having to pass or wait for a 'nearly empty' bus or train. I get to either remind them that due to the time of day most people are catching it in the opposite direction, but it still has to return to the start of the route to pick up more - or also that I'm in the car with them because my train has stopped running for the night, seemingly because there's 'no demand'. If people can't use PT reliably then yeah, there will be 'no demand'... because we need something that actually takes us where we're going.
Night services
This is the biggest - I can't even go to a weeknight movie after work and make it to the last train, I have to catch a bus, which takes an extra 40 minutes including a long walk home from the terminus - not so safe at night so I've stopped doing it. Several times when ensuring I make it to the last scheduled service, it's actually been cancelled due to 'train crew matters' or faults, and that leaves you stranded as well. It basically means if planning to be out late I will arrange a ride or else I will go home, get my car and return - that shouldn't have to be the case!
Train faults and delays
Everything fails sometimes, so it's understandable that there are occasional delays, but our train lines are already not able to sustain the services they run without weekly disruptions, and CRL is supposed to double the capacity. If our current lines, points, and stations can't be brought up to standard quickly, and more crew can't be added, then it's just going to mean even more frustrating delays on the sparkling new network.

To increase the appeal and viabilty of public transport, we need to radically reallocate road space to buslanes

People need to be able to consider using public transport is a viable option, with viable travel times. This could be possible if buses weren't held up in general traffic. Improvements such as bus lanes and bus priority measures at intersections means our budget for bus operations can provide us with better value for money and good public transport outcomes. Reallocating the road space from inefficient general traffic to efficient bus use provides enables our budget to be better utilised.

The current buslane programme rollout has been underwhelming:
Twenty four kilometres was delivered over 2015/2016 and 2016/17, ie average of twelve km per year.
Five kilometres delivered 2018
Eleven kilometres scheduled for 2019

We propose that the Integrated Corridor Delivery Programme and other AT programmes reallocate general traffic lanes to bus lanes and other sustainable modes at a much faster rate than this, and continues them through intersections instead of using so much road space for general traffic at intersections.

This is great, Greater Auckland. Radical reallocation is exactly what we need including in road space - bus and other alternate lanes. Thanks for putting it so clearly. Now don't let those nasty 'Climate Leaders' pretend this is their sweet turn of phrase.

I looked at taking a bus to and from work. I would need to leave home at 7.10 for an 8.30 start and take 2 buses. Why would i ?

Because it might be better for you if you chose an active options. Or it might be better for the environment as there might be less emissions. Or it might be better for your community because you could be a thought leaders. Or it might be better actually for the value of your car, as it will gather less mileage. Or it might be better for your wellbeing as you might find the time relaxing and actually have some time occasionally to read or take time out. And if you've been thinking about, then chances are you are a bit worried about climate change. This can be frustration and it is natural to look to the barriers as reasons. In the end though you might find a significant psychological burden is lifted when you MAKE THE SHIFT, knowing you are playing your part in the solution, not pretending it is someone elses problem or fault, and continuing to perpetuate the problem.
